20th Kaleidoscope Biblical Preaching Event

20th Kaleidoscope Biblical Preaching Event

The Synod of the Southwest will hold its 20th Biblical Preaching Event at beautiful Ghost Ranch, August 1-7, 2016. The Rev. Dr. Carolyn Browning Helsel, assistant professor of homiletics at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, will lead this event entitled “PREACHING WHEN RACE MATTERS”.

This week-long event looks at the history of racialization, and how the Christian tradition has both fostered and resisted racism. Preachers will learn about racial identity development theory and how this helps to sustain long-term engagement in challenging racial injustice. Additionally, preachers consider the gifts they can bring to this conversation from their own histories and experiences, and together they will workshop sermons that engage this subject.
